アイン・ランドが提唱した思想「客観主義」（Objectivism）の胎芽は, 1943年に発表された『水源』（The Fountainhead ）にすでに在った．「客観主義」は，マルクス主義やリバータリアニズムと同じく，西洋近代啓蒙思想の発展形のひとつである．ランドは，理想的人物を描くことが書く目的だと明言している．その言葉が示すように，『水源』の主人公は，ルネサンスや宗教改革や啓蒙思想が生み出した「近代人」という人間モデルの美質のみを臆面もなくロマンチックに体現する人間として造形されている．その意味で，『水源』は「近代讃歌」である．同時に，自由と個人主義と自己の幸福の追求を是とするアメリカ的価値観と，国家への奉仕と集団主義と利他主義を是とするソ連的なるものの相克を描いた「冷戦期のアメリカ国民文学」である．また，ユダヤ人であったことの不安と恐怖と願望が凝縮された小説でもある．加えて，第一波フェミニズム運動と第二波フェミニズム運動の端境期に,破天荒なヒロイン像を提示したプレ・フェミニズム小説でもあった．しかし，『水源』には，1957年に出版された『肩をすくめるアトラス』に示唆されているような「邪悪な社会における善と正義の生き残り」という問題への解決は提示されていない．理想的人間像を提示するのならば，そのような人間の生存を可能にする社会システムの提案と構築が必要とされる．文学だけの世界にとどまってはいられない．どうしても政治が問題になる．アイン・ランドが「客観主義」という思想を生成した過程には，『水源』創作時の苦い認識が関与していた．

Ayn Rand identified the theme of The Fountainhead (1943) with “individualism versus collectivism”, not in politics but within a man’s soul. An innovative, independent architect fights a collectivist society; an idealistic heroine is torn between her love for the hero and her withdrawal from values, which she considers are doomed to be ruined by a corrupted society. But the hero wins the battle, defending individual rights, reliance on reason, and the concept of creativity and self-generated action with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life.
If individualism really is central to Americanism, The Fountainhead is the quintessential American novel. If the hero is a romanticized paragon of “modern man,” The Fountainhead is celebrating modernization as an unfinished project of human liberation which has been in progress so far since it started from Renaissance. Modernization is also the process which enables Jewish people, pariahs in Europe to survive the discriminative society. In this view, The Fountainhead is truly a Jewish novel. Although Ayn Rand herself rejected the label “feminist” and condemned strong strands of collectivism in feminist movements, The Fountainhead is a pre-feminist novel with the heroine who is superior to men in ability, intelligence and integrity.
Several of the basic ideas of Objectivism, which Ayn Rand called her philosophy, are explicated in The Fountainhead . But this novel fails to present a convincing solution about the survival of reason and heroic achievement in a hostile world. How can the good man live in an evil, corrupted society? Thus politics became to matter for Rand.
