本稿は，1990年代に日本の思想界で生じた歴史主体論争に着目し，現代日本社会における戦争・戦後責任を担う公共圏を形成するための諸条件と理論枠組みを抽出する．その際，歴史主体論争の文献と二次文献を用いた．
戦後生まれの世代が中心となり私生活主義が蔓延した日本社会において，戦争・戦後責任を担う主体を形成するためには，日本の敗戦前と敗戦後を連続させた上で日本人共同体に帰属する，日本の敗戦前と敗戦後を分断させた上でアジアの諸共同体と連帯する，という２つの道筋がある．前者は敗戦前と敗戦後の日本のエトノスを結びつけ再形成する，エトノスを基軸とした社会の構想であり，後者はアジアのエトノスとの出会いにより現在の日本のエトノスをデモスの視点から批判する，デモスを基軸とした社会の構想である．しかし論争において，そうした主体による公共圏（政治文化やエートス）の具体的な条件は提示されていない．そこで現代日本社会の文脈を少し検討したところ，日本人の「自覚の問題」と他者の「承認の問題」という条件がみられた．
ここに示されるのは，戦争・戦後責任を担う公共圏を形成する際の「デモスとエトノスの調整をめぐる問題圏」である．本研究でいうデモスとエトノスは，互いに浸透し影響し合う１事象の２側面である．

This paper discusses creation of a public sphere that consists of people who have awareness on war responsibility to Japan, focusing on the controversy on “Subject in History (Rekishi syutai)” in 1990s. It suggests a theoretical framework and conditions that may assist in this creation.
The controversy developed in a Japanese society that consisted of people born after World War II and held the private-life principle. There was a main difference of opinion for the public sphere; one emphasized attribution of war
responsibility to the Japanese community continued before and after the war, the other emphasized solidarity with the broader Asian communities dividing the Japanese community before and after the war. However, the controversy does
not present their concrete conditions. Thus, we considered some cases in contemporary Japanese society and found two issues: awareness on war responsibility by Japanese and recognition by other Asians.
These highlight the difficulty of “coordination and articulation between demos and ethnos”. Demos and ethnos are often considered to be dichotomous; however, in this paper they are seen as two aspects of one phenomenon of human
activity.
