大学の社会連携（地域貢献，「産業連携」，「地域連携」）むけて，21世紀の当初から「産学連携」「産官学連携」という掛け声のもと，大学という高等教育組織が「社会」とコミットすることが基本的なものであることが求められることとなっている．地域の産業においても，各企業の経営，人材問題，研究体制の点から実際に大学との連携をもとめる動向がある．他方で，連携の課題，またその根本的な視座を問う声がある．
本研究は，最終的に，新たな社会的変動の時代，「大学」という組織が，いかなる「組織としての環境適応」（organizationaladoption）をし得るのか，またその課題は何かを組織スタディーズの観点から追求しようとするものであるが，本稿はその前提として，以下まず，日本における大学の「社会連携」の背景と動向を確認し，特にそのうえで1980年代から急発進した米国の大学の「産学連携」の課題を確認することで，変動期をへて，大学に内在するミッションと社会連携のありようを見晴るかす試みを行った．検討の結果，本稿（１）の検討を経て，①米国においては，1960年代の連邦による手厚い研究補助金と，80年代以降の「産学連携」の動向が現在のアメリカの研究大学のフレームワークを形作ったこと，②「産学連携」の進展過程に「利益相反」が社会的問題となったこと，③大学のミッション」に関わる議論として，消極的な「利益相反」議論のみならず，他組織との，かつまた諸組織から構成される地域社会との「価値創造」「目的共有」の形成的な推進が不可欠であること，そしてそのために「組織としての環境適応」にかかわる組織論の視点が解明の可能性を大きく持つこと，この三点を結果として得た．（次の論文（２）においてそれに基づく論究を予定している．）

Since the beginning of the 21st century, universities, as institutions of higher education, have been required to commit to "society" under the slogan of "industry-university cooperation" and "industry-government-academia cooperation" in order to achieve social cooperation (“regional contribution”, "industrial cooperation" and "regional cooperation").Industries and local companies are seeking cooperation with universities in terms of their management, human resource issues and research systems. However, based on the reflection of experiencing “conflicts of interest” problems in university-industry cooperation in the past years, we are now confronting a fundamental question of why we need cooperation and what kind of corporation is necessary.
From the perspective of organizational studies, the core question of this this research is what kind of "institu-tional adaptation" a university organization could accomplish and what kind of challenges it faces in this new era of social change. This paper tries to access the mission inherent in universities and possible forms of social cooperation after the social change by way of conforming the background and situation of universities' "social cooperation" in Japan, and by confirming the issues of "industry-university cooperation" in U.S. universities that have made rapid progress since the 1980s.
We acquired the following 3 findings through the examination:
1) In the U.S., the generous research subsidies by the federal government in the 1960s and the trend of "industry-academia collaboration" since the 1980s have shaped the current framework of research universities in the U.S.,
2) In the process of development of "industry-academia collaboration," "conflict of interest" has become a social problem,
3)As for the discussion on the "mission of the university," it is indispensable to promote not only passive discussions on "conflict of interest" but also formative discussions on "value creation" and "shared purpose" with other organizations and with the local community, which consists of multi organizations. In terms of establishing or substantially envisaging the "value creation" and "shared purpose", the viewpoint of organizational studies (such as "organizational adaption")might be potentially productive.
