本研究の目的は，日本における多文化の背景を持つ住民の高齢化の実情と生活支援について概観し，多様化する高齢者の「その人らしい暮らし」の支援には，今後なにが必要なのかを明らかにすることである．現在，日本に住む外国籍住民は増加傾向にあり，見えにくい形であるが高齢化率も増加している．その為，彼らの文化にあわせた支援のニーズが高まっている．本稿では，多文化の背景を持つ高齢者に関する先行研究を概観した結果，高齢者たちの多くが，１）社会権からの制度的な排除，２）経済的問題を抱え，３）先行きが不透明な中で暮らしていることが明らかになった．そのため，支援者たちは，地域で多文化の背景を持つ高齢者の存在を把握し，彼らの複雑なライフコースと文化を理解するためにライフストーリー・インタビューを取り入れた支援の提供が必要であると考えられる．

The purpose of this study was to overview the living conditions of senior citizens with multicultural backgrounds in local communities in Japan and to clarify what kind of care and support is needed to fulfil the goals of person-centered care. While the number of older foreign residents may go largely unnoticed, in many communities their numbers on the increase. As a result, the demand and need for culturally competent care for older foreign residents has increased. According to this overview, many aged foreign residents face the following issues: 1) systematic exclusion from their social rights, 2) socio-economic problems, and 3) an uncertain future. This study suggests that care providers should become more aware of the aged foreign residents in their areas. Moreover, in order to provide culturally competent care for these people, the life story interview method has proved effective to both understanding their complicated trajecto-ries and to point to passing their final days with dignity in Japan.
