都市に生活する人々にとって，都市の中心街にある通り・大通り，公園，緑地，広場，商店街路などの屋外空間は，買い物，食事，憩い，休憩，レクリエーション，スポーツ，文化的行動，業務行動などの日常生活になくてはならない重要な都市機能の一つである．世界の主要都市における通り・大通りは，都市空間の重要な構成要素の一つでありながらそれらの詳細は解明されておらず，集大成されてない．そこで様々な都市の屋外空間として都市機能の集積の最も多く存在すると考えられるヨーロッパ諸国の中なら，その国の代表的な歴史ある，また政治，経済，産業，観光等で躍動的な都市を選定し，それらの都市の賑わいのある通り・大通りを取り上げ，その歴史，機能的役割，都市中の位置，その長さ及び断面を採取し，一堂に集め機能的，形態的考察をおこなう．

Many of the cities in the world have a Mall at their heart, for example The Mall (The Mall) in London, The Mall (Champs Elysees) in Paris, The Mall (the National Mall) in Washington D.C, the Mall park in Sapporo, Hisaya Mall park in Nagoya. The objective of this study is to research and analyze the role and function of the Mall in the city. This paper begins by examining the data of the shape and scale of the 35 mall streets in 34 cities in European countries.
The results are as follows; 1) The mall in each of the towns has been renovated for the safety of pedestrians, and the renovation and remodeling has helped in the activation of the city. 2) These mall have widened the sidewalk to protect pedestrians from cars, and enhancements of public transport design has been achieved. 3) At both ends of the mall are arranged monuments and historic buildings. These include a palace, a Royal Palace, churchs, city halls, historic monuments, museums, galleries, theaters, embassys and a memorial plaza. 4) In addition, on both sides of the mall, department stores, shopping mall, public buildings, hotels, restaurants, café, commercial and business facilities are located. There are facilities that are essential to the daily life of the people is placed. As a result, the mall has become a street space alive with crowds.
