Abstract

Autonomous learning can be promoted by helping learners develop control over the planning, monitoring and evaluation of their learning. In this study, can-do statements were introduced to learners as tools to promote greater control over learning. According to the results of a survey administered after can-do statements were used by learners engaged in a study skills course, there was evidence to suggest that their use can contribute to the development of autonomous learning skills. This paper discusses the results of the survey, learners' perceptions of the use of can-do statements, their potential benefits and limitations.
