Abstract

Assessing communication skills in a second language (L2) context will often lead to the assessment of spoken language. Traditionally, evaluating spoken language has been conducted in the form of interviews conducted by the rater. However, being formally interviewed in a L2 test with the rater serving as the interlocutor can feel unnatural, at best, or even intimidating, possibly limiting the potential of the speaker. New methods for assessing L2 learner communicative skills via paired format speaking tests propose a promising solution to the limitations of traditional interviewing methods. Conversely, there are a number of variables to consider in paired format speaking tests, i.e., variability, mismatched proficiency levels, and rater training. The current paper discusses some of the variables to consider for paired format speaking tests.
