The purpose of the experiments reported here was to further clarify the effect of varying arm flexion on anticipatory postural adjustments. To accomplish the purpose, we compared the effect of different movement amplitudes and directions on the timing and the magnitude of EMG activity in the postural muscle (biceps femoris and soleus) with those in the focal muscle (anterior deltoid). Latencies of preceding EMG activities of ipsilateral biceps femoris were not modified by varying movement amplitudes and directions. However, EMG magnitudes of ipsilateral biceps femoris and durations of silent phase of ipsilateral soleus were modified by varying movement amplitudes and directions. Another interesting observed evidence was that significant correlation coefficient was observed between latencies of preceding EMG activity of ipsilateral biceps femoris and EMG reaction times of anterior deltoid in one subject.
Those results suggest that onset of preceding EMG activities of ipsilateral postural muscles related to anticipatory postural adjustment are not only dependent on the speed of arm movement but also EMG reaction time in some case, and quality of EMG activity of postural muscles are modified by movement attributes (cf. moement amplitude and direction).
