Abstract

The purpose of the experiment reported here was to further clarify effects of arm flexion on anticipatory postural adjustments. To accomplish the aim, we compared EMG activities changes in the postural muscle between with or without load conditions. The timing of EMG activity of postural muscle (ipsilateral biceps femoris ; BFi, contralateral biceps femoris ; BFc, ipsilateral soleus ; SOLi) related to associated postural adjustments was modifies by with or without load on the arm. Under the condition with load (L+) latencies of preceding EMG activities (EMG activities of BFi) were shorter than those under the condition without load (L-). Durations of BFi discharge in L+ were longer than those in L-. Durations of silent phase (SOLi) in L+ were longer than those in L-. Furthermore, H-reflex were inhibited during silent phases in both conditions.However, amount of H-reflex were inhibition was smaller in L+ than in L-. In addition, knee joint movements during arm flexion were smaller in L+ than in L-. Therefore, it was suggested that changes of EMG activity of postural mascle and H-reflex inhibition between L- and L+ were closely connected with variable knee joint movements which inevitably occurs to arm flexions under conditions with or without load.
