Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to clarify how media construct educational practice by focusing on
German media theory and Marshall McLuhan’s theory of media.
According to Peter Sloterdijk and Yasuo Imai, we communicate with others not through but
in media. For example, we decide on signification in language and communicate with others in
language. Media are essential for us to communicate with others. On the other hand, McLuhan
indicated that “The medium is the message”. He distinguished between media contents analysis
and media understanding, and we should explore the magic of media or their subliminal charge.
He considered how media as material influence a media user. Media control his thought and
cognition.
It is an indispensable for educational practice to understand how media influence thought,
cognition and communication of teachers and students. This paper clarifies a structure of media
construction in the dimension of communication and material. This finding may have important
implications for the analysis of educational practice. Understanding how media construct
educational practice will help us the analysis of teacher’s questions and student’s reaction based on
media theory.
