The Department of Living Culturology held the Third Fashion Educational Symposium for high school teachers of homemaking courses on July 11 (Sat.), 1998. Concerning the fashion section, analyzing contemporary young people's fashion trends started the Symposium. Then a proposal for the most popular teaching materials for high school students' clothing classes was provided by using a mini-fashion show style. A description of our approach is as follows: 1. In the Japanese fashion business world, a review of brands and structural defects has been going on recently, and yet overproduction causes continuous sluggishness of consumption. But in spite of such serious circumstances, the young people's market is the only active area in fashion sales. Thanks to fashion magazines and word of mouth, a short cycle of continuous consumption is seen among the young. 2. After the mini-skirt trend in late 1985, the young have taken a leadership role in fashion, they have gradually led society to the light and casual trend. 3. After 1996, obscure new designers were appearing in central or regional cities and they created the movement of making clothes from a freer conception. This movement is called 'Indies Brand-independent groups' and they do everything by themselves from planning and manufacturing to selling. 4. Accepting the contemporary young people's subconscious longing for creation mentioned above, we tried to find a method of making them choose designing and materials by themselves. As a consequence of these investigations, we found that using stretch materials was adopted for designing of 'line tape pants' considering the visual effect when they wear these clothes. 5. Preparing a stage for students gives them creative zest and understanding; and as the result of this, dress making classes became much happier than ordinary classes.
