There are two main bases with which to select girls' summer wears, namely, color and pattern. In my first report Ⅰ described patterns; this time, we made researches on the color. What color do the mothers, who usually play the part of buying their daughters' clothes, like and what colored dresses do they want to have their daughters wear? What color do the girls like or want to wear? What colored dresses do they actually wear? These are items on which actual conditions were checked up because we consider it one of the important points in choosing the dress to purchase. We can surmise that it depends upon the refinement, the culture, the taste, and the character of the purchaser. The survey was made in the early part of July, 1967. The subjects used were the girls between 2 and 10 years old and their mothers (250 in number) living in and around Hiroshima, and, picked out at random. The surveyors asked pre- arranged questions and put down the answers themselves. The color samples used for this purpose were as follows: 1. Chart 1, 24 circular color diagram, 2. Chart 2, hue 5, orange color value, and 3. the same colors but different chroma (except 14 colors), taken from the "Harmonic Color Charts" (151 colors), the third edition, published by the Japan Color Research Institute, and 4. the color-tone scheme appended to "Clothing and Colors." According to the survey, generally mothers do not like less valued colors except 18B -2.4-7s and achromatic colors, and women like violet best of all. The result of our survey revealed that mothers in Hiroshima district in summer might be different from those in other places; they did not necessarily want to let their children wear the dresses whose color mothers liked. They are greatly influenced by the current fashion and the mass media. Besides it is so difficult to give correct knowledge of color to children that adult advice is always indispensaple.
