In Historia Francorum X (H. F. for short), we see viri fortiores, viri magnifici, maiores (natu), meliores, optimates, primi, princeps, priores, proceres, seniores, potentes, viri honorati, which seem to mean aristocrats or magnates. The problem of the rise of aristocracy has been discussed by H. Mitteis, O. Brunner, H. Dannenbauer, Th. Mayer in this field. I pointed out some time ago (in the Proceedings of Literature Department, Hiroshima University, Vol. 18.) that we shall have a lot of trouble when we assume that the whole aristocratic dominion was arranged under the governmental system by the early merovingian kings. As generally known, the word "nobiles" in regard to the Germanic can be seen only once in H. F. Therefore, we had better regard viri fortiores, viri magnifici etc. as the magnates rather than the aristocrats. This way of understanding helps us realize better what it was. These expressions as viri fortiores, viri magnifici etc. might depend on the subjective idea of Bishop Gregory as author and more over the usage of these expressions was different at different cases. But these expressions became clear and simple in the Fredegar chronicle, so I assumed that we can imagine the aristocratic system gradually become clear in the 7th century. (Proceedings of the above-mentioned, Vol. 21.) It is difficult for us to generalize the acts of the magnates in H. F. They became the officials in courts, signed the treaties as delegates, judged the cases and attended the court-ceremony, while resisting the public powers, revolting against the kings and often changing the fealty at their will. In the classical theory, the rise of aristocracy was the necessary result of the weakened government by the civil wars among the merovingians' divided kingdoms in the 6th century. They say, however, this presumption should be completely corrected in the latest studies. In this paper, I examined the acts of all the magnates in H. F. and confirmed some tendencies of merovingian magnates in the confused conditions. Concerining this, I tried to reconsider the treaty at andelot (587). |
