With regards to home launderings including actual washing as well as softening treatment after washing, 137 households in and around Hiroshima responded to the questionnaire in cooperation with the survey conducted throughout a given week within the period from the end of July, 1978 through the end of August, 1978 to find out the actual condition. The results are as follow: 1. The number of clothes washed throughout a week by 137 households reached 22,036 items, averaging about 5 items for one person per day. 2. In view of the kind of clothes, underwears registered the greatest number with pants and panties exceeding over the other types. 3. Concerning material, cotton, linen and rayon together occupied approximately 80 per cent, corresponding to about four times as many as articles of synthetic fiber. 4. Approximately 74 per cent of total respondents answered they had experience of using softener. About 47 per cent are now using softener. 5. As to objects softener is treated with, any kind of clothes washed at home are cited. Such clothes that get in direct touch with human skin obtained a higher rate. 6. With regards the density of softener, when an electric washing machine is employed, the survey demonstrates the fact that users almost keep to the standard level as indicated by manufacturers. 7. In case of using receptacles of smaller size such as basins, buckets or washbasins for softening treatment, it was found the density is about 10 to 28 times as large as the standard level. 8. As to effect after the softener is treated, the greatest number of respondents appreciate softness to the touch. It is noted there were a large number of .respondents who mentioned that clothes of synthetic fiber become resistent to electrification.
