In making garments, many students find it necessary to adjust their clothes and revise their paper patterns and drawings at the time of basting and fitting. This seems to be caused by the various conditions of human bodies. In order to find the body types and the amount of adjustment required of the individual bodies for proper pattern drawing and revision, we examined the actual conditions of individual bodies by taking body measurement and silhouette measurement of the students. The body types as viewed from the side were classified into A, Band C body types. An examination revealed, however, that body type AA was 19.2%, BB 2.6% and CC 0%, and that the rest 78.2% did not belong to any of these three body types. Body types A, B and C, then, were combined into nine body types according to the classification shown in Bunka Lectures on Garments 2. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. Body type AC was 34.6%, AA 19. 2%, AB 16.7% and CA 12.8%. The rest was very small in number and even BB, which is commonly regarded as the standard body type, was only 2.6%. 2. An examination into the back and the front of the body as viewed from the side revealed that, at the back, 70.5% belonged to A and 15.4% to B, and that, at the front, 41.0% belonged to A and 38.4% to C. This shows that body type A is remarkable both at the back and at the front. 3. The measurements of the body concavity as viewed from the side were distributed between 0~5.5cm at the back, and 0~4.5 cm at the front. The highest distribution ratio came between 0.5 ~2.0 cm (37 examples, 47.4%) at the back and 0~1.0 cm (45 examples, 57.7%) at the front. Those examples which showed 0cm in the measurements of the body concavity were as follows: 12 examples (15.4%) at the back, 16 examples (20.5%) at the front and 2 examples (2.6%) both at the back and at the front. Our study, which we believe has revealed a general tendency in the body types and body concavity as viewed from the side, will be continued with a greater number of students so that more data may be obtained for proper pattern drawing.
