This study suggests (a) some English songs that are appropriate for Japanese elementary school pupils in the English class and (b) a teaching approach for introducing the songs in the classroom. According to the content section of the teaching guide for the Course of Study, songs and chants are included as part of foreign language activities for students “to become familiar with the sounds and rhythms of the foreign language, to learn its differences from the Japanese language, and to be aware of the interesting aspects of language and its richness” (MEXT, 2008, p. 11). However, the textbook does not emphasize the teaching of English songs because of the difficulty in introducing them to senior elementary graders. Therefore, this study examines seven English songs based on (a) their popularity among English-speaking children (three songs), (b) the Japanese students’familiarity with them (two songs), and (c) the pupils’ developmental stage (two songs). Further, it discusses how to teach the above songs by reviewing foreign language listening research. Finally, it examines some pedagogical considerations—the extent to which teachers should teach the songs (e.g., contents, linguistic features, and background information).
