 In recent years in Japan, music popularization activities under the name of “musical outreach” have been carried out enthusiastically as part of programs that incorporate experiential activities, with musicians traveling to various locations, particularly public halls and elementary schools and other educational institutions. However, comparatively little musical outreach has been carried out by community centers, which are regional social education centers. In the present study, from the results of questionnaire surveys carried out at actual outreach events at community centers, it was found that musical outreach at community centers differs from outreach at elementary schools and other educational institutions. Obtaining the cooperation of parents, guardians and community residents 1) leads to the creation of an environment in which parents and children can enjoy music; 2) results in an increased amount of time devoted to music in daily life; and 3) results in increased opportunities for parents and children to talk about music. Change was observed among parents and guardians themselves when they participated with the children. This change led to concrete actions on the part of parents and guardians, including “attending concerts” and “starting musical instrument lessons,” and it appears that outreach at the community center was effective as an “activity that widens the circle of music,” which is the expected role of musical outreach. In the future, we would like to gather more evidence demonstrating that musical outreach at community centers is not only a music popularization activity for children and their parents and guardians, but is also a part of music-centered community building with local residents.
