Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate "what is the philosophy of physical education?" in order to obtain suggestion for the new direction of the philosophy of physical education. Specifically, I investigated "what is physical education", "what is sports", "what is philosophy of physical education." The conclusions of the study are as follows:
Definition of Physical Education and Sports in Japan was attempted by referring to those in the West after World War II. Japanese scholars regarded Physical Education as education with physical activity and Sports as a physical exercise mediated by playing games or exercise culture such as games. They separated Physical Education from Sports. Meanwhile, in today's society and the Spots policy of Japan, sports has become a superordinate concept of Physical Education. Looking at the transition of philosophy of physical education in Japan, it started under the name "the principles of physical education" since 1955. After that, at the General Meeting of Japan Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences in June 2005, "the principles of physical education" was renamed as "philosophy of physical education". I also examined the research contents of philosophy of physical education. As a result, various problems in sports and school physical education have been drawing attention as a subject of philosophy of physical education in recent years. However, there were many overlapping with contents handled by other research fields.
In conclusion, I proposed that it is necessary to investigate its essence by using an appropriate philosophical methodology in order to build up unique things where philosophy of physical education is distinguished from other research fields. In addition, I proposed that when philosophy of physical education is too deviated to the methodology, it becomes theoretical thing different from reality. And I also suggested that it is necessary to face the reality of the sports world and school physical education and critically investigate the essence and idea.
