Abstract

This article is a research paper that presents an overview of early childhood education in Pistoia, Italy, a city with unique early childhood education policies, based on my observational studies, interviews with education coordinators in the city, as well as the city's Public Service Charter. Early childhood education and childcare in Pistoia city are distinctive for their entrenchment in the local community, promotion of the active participation of the children's parents and guardians, as well as their "holistic" approach both in terms of city space and the personnel involved. In addition, they extend the "inclusiveness" unique to Italian education into a modern context with respect for individual and cultural diversity. The educational activities in Pistoia city have been conceived of as a means to "offer children the experience of acknowledging their own actions, feelings, and intuitions, and to imbue them with meaning." From this perspective, they also emphasize giving children the opportunity for "aesthetic experiences."
