Abstract |
Assessment of drawings by infants may be an important measure of psychological development in early childhood. To evaluate this possibility, we examined changes in drawings by children with typical development and those with a suspected delay or disorder in development. The process of changes in drawings by children is related to maturation and experiences. To understand development of individual children, it is important to evaluate the types of drawings, such as “accidental,” “intended” and “meaningful” drawings. Children begin to express their inner feelings in a drawing and discover how to draw a circle. It is important to support and promote this process, since it is based on development of relationships in daily life; that is, establishment of social relationships and sensory-motor development. Then, children begin to show symbolic function in drawing, which is important for establishment of emotionallevel communication for development of social relationships, while repeated drawing experiences promote sensory-motor development. Detailed examination of expression in drawings may be effective for assessment of psychological development in early childhood and establishment of specific communication with children. |
