This is the pilot study on compliance-resisting behavior in Japan. This study investigated the effects of situational variables on the likelihood of use of the four types of the strategies to resist compliance-gaining attempts: identity managing, negotiation, justifying, and non-negotiation. Subjects rated the strategies on the probability to use them to resist complying in each of eight situations which varied systematically in the level of agent-target intimacy (high or low), the age of agent-target(elder or same), and the agent-target's request (changing a part-time job or helping a moving). Results of ANOVA, 2 (intimacy) x 2(age) x 2(request) x 4(strategy), showed only the main effect of the strategy. The results showed that the negotiation comes first, then justifying, non-negotiation, and finally identity managing to order the likelihood of the use of the four types.
