Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to conceive and develop an educational practice to solve ijime problems in the age of the SNS (Social Networking Service) by introducing the concept of “misinterpretation, misreading, and dis-communication”. Media education, then, is one of the few instruments which teachers and students possess for beginning to challenge the great inequalities in knowledge and power between those who manufacture information in their own interests and those who consume it innocently as news or entertainment. And, media education aims to produce critical participation. Media education has an educational view that makes it possible to see things that are hidden.
This educational view, however, has limitations when we consider communication in the age of the SNS. In this era, the fear of disclosure has been stifled by the youths’ joy of being noticed. The problem is not disclosure but increasing the joy of being noticed through SNS. That is why youths are afraid that they are not to be seen by anyone. In order to overcome such fears, we need to intentionally create “misinterpretation, misreading, and dis-communication” by using media. Furthermore, we positively recapture these communication skills. Children and students are required to communicate a lot, which has brought about the hierarchy of friendship. It is a factor that makes the problem of ijime in the cyber space more severe.
Therefore, we aimed to solve such ijime problems, and conceived a moral lesson to a communication method in the age of the SNS. Through the lesson, it became clear that: First of all, communication is defined in a relation to the hierarchy of friendship. Secondly, students do not positively recognize the concept of “misinterpretation, misreading, and dis-communication”. This paper clarifies the possibility that children will positively re-evaluate this concept through this class.
