Abstract

Japan continues to address the challenges faced by small schools in remote areas along with the problem of depopulation after World War II. In recent years, as Japan faces an aging society with a declining birth-rate, the role of schools in community development has become more prominent, and the relationship between schools and communities is being increasingly explored. This study examines the educational practices of a small school in Hiroshima Prefecture, with a focus on its role in the local community. The ‘KIHARA Eco Project', which aims to promote the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among students, is at the core of the educational practices of the school that was investigated in this study. In addition to specialised lectures from researchers, a distinguishing feature of the project is its cooperative relationship with the local fishery association. Regarding this project, the school states, ‘we would like to work together with the local community so that (the project) becomes a “local treasure” and an activity rooted in the community'. Our findings suggest that it is possible to implement sustainable experiential programs when schools are supported by the community.
