本研究の目的は療養型病棟の認知症者におけるトイレ関連動作の自立度と認知機能，行動心理症状（Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia：以下 BPSD）を構成する各項目の関係性を明らかにすることとした。
　対象は療養型病棟の軽度から中等度認知症者 25 名であった。調査項目は基本属性，トイレ移乗の自立度，トイレ動作の自立度，認知症重症度，認知機能，BPSD とした。統計解析はトイレ移乗とトイレ動作を自立群と非自立群に分類し比較した。
　結果，認知機能の時間の見当識と文章筆記がトイレ移乗，トイレ動作ともに自立群が有意に高値であり，効果量は時間の見当識が最も高かった。BPSD の易刺激性はトイレ動作にて２群間に有意差を認め，自立群で易刺激性が高かった。
　トイレ関連動作が非自立の者は見当識が低下しやすい可能性が示唆された。また，トイレ動作能力が高い者は易刺激性と判断される傾向が認められた。しかし本研究は横断研究であり，因果関係は明確ではなく，引き続き調査が必要である。

This study aimed to clarify the relationship of the degree of independence in toileting behavior with each item that constitutes cognitive function and the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in patients with dementia in convalescent wards.
The study cohort included 25 patients with mild-to-moderate dementia in convalescent wards. The investigation items were as follows: basic attributes, degree of independence in transferring to and from the toilet, degree of independence in toileting behavior, severity of dementia, cognitive function, and BPSD. Statistical analysis compared the independent and non-independent groups in terms of the degree of independence in transferring to and from the toilet and in toileting behavior.
The independent group had significantly higher values of cognitive function in terms of temporal orientation and sentence writing and had a significantly greater degree of independence in transferring to and from the toilet and in toileting behavior; the effect size was the highest for temporal orientation. Furthermore, of the BPSD, irritability was significantly higher in the independent group than in the non-independent group.
The toileting behavior of the two groups suggested that the non-independent patients may be more prone to have impaired orientation. The study also found that patients with a degree of independence in terms of toileting behavior tended to be diagnosed with irritability. However, as this study was a cross-sectional study and the causal association remains unclear, further investigation is needed.
