Abstract

We conducted the study on what kinds of puzzles and games are effective as education materials by providing the algorithm education which mathematical puzzles and mathematical games are used.
As a result, we found out that the students had more interests in Northcott's game,which the checker is moved on a checkerboard, and actively performed learning activities,although Nim and Northcott's game are the match-up game which has the same winning strategy; however, the difference between those games is that Nim is played by alternately removing stones from a pile,while Northcott's game is played by alternately moving the checker on a checkerboard and attacking the opponent. Since Northcott's game looks like and has similar rules to Shogi or Go, it is suggested that using the education materials which are similar to the game that students are familiar with are effective in order for students to increase learning motivation by the algorithm education.
