Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how English learners acquire expressions in English and to explore effective ways of acquiring such expressions. In order to clarify to what extent memorization by chunking is effective,the following hypothesis is proposed: Expressions employing inanimate subjects with transitive verbs are produced more correctly by English learners in Japan than those employing animate subjects. The data analyzed for this paper are taken from the results of translation tests.
