In 1933, Rampo Edogawa's paper entitled, “Secret Passion of J.A. Symonds” appeared as a series in the journal named “Psychoanalysis,” published by Tokyo Psychoanalysis Science Research Center, supervised by Kenji Otsuki. The paper was not finished after all. This study examined its second issue, focusing on the reason why Rampo excessively idealized Symonds. The results indicated the following process consisting of two phases: in the first phase, there was identification through introjection from Symonds to Rampo. In the second phase, there was projective identification from Rampo to Symonds. Through this process, there was excessive identification of Rampo with Symonds was. Rampo over idealized Symonds and misunderstood the fact, i.e. he thought “Symonds had never had homosexual intercourse in his real life.”
