Abstract

This article analyzes a nineteenth-century English reader. It is a self-study book and has interlinear word-forword Japanese translation with numbers indicating the order for translating English words into Japanese words. This type of self-study book, widely used in Japan in those days, is the prototype for the translation method in Japan. The basic movement in English-Japanese translation, a combination of one rightward and one leftward movement, derives from translating forward first and then translating backward. A simple computer program for the data analysis software called "R" was written to analyze the order for translating English words into Japanese words in this type of translation. The results explain some important aspects of how and why the basic movement in English-Japanese translation develops into complicated zigzag patterns.
