Biber et al (1999) analyzesthe distribution of English adverbs and adverbials and their functions, by dividing them into three categories: circumstance, stance, and linking. This paper will look at the circumstance adverbials (additive/restrictive and time) and the stance adverbials (epistemic doubt/certainty, actuality, and imprecision) to discuss the functions of the adcerbials in conversation. Conversational participants use these adverbials for sending additional messages, drawing attention from each other, putting emphasis on their utterances, avoiding direct expressions. With these adverbials, they also attempt to express their interest in the utterances of their partners to keep thier interactive relationship as well as the vonversation inself.
