Abstract

The purpose of the present paper is to examine whether or not plastique animée could be effective in promoting children7s initiative in music appreciation and also differences in instructional approach would affect contents learned by children in actual classroom settings. It was found that communication, creativity, cooperation, and a sense of achievement were hieghtened in class A childern who received instructions to focus on imagery and body movement conjured from a musical piece. On the pther hand, abilities to analyze music and grasp score reading were marked in Class B children who recieved instructions to pay attention to the details and components of the same musical piece. These findings suggest that learning through plastique animée is effective in music education, both education-by-music as well as educarion-for-music. It is thus hoped that application of plastique animée will contribute to the development of music education in elementary schools.
