Abstract

Food allergy, an immunological adverse reaction to certain foods, occurs more frequently in infants
than in adults. To prevent the onset of allergic symptoms, patients with food allergy have to eliminate
certain allergens from their diet. Therefore management of nutrition care in food allergy patients is
important to maintain the quality of life. Moreover, because the contents of daily diet in the patients
generally depend on those of their families in home, it is necessary for all of the family members to
understand nutrition care management of food allergy against the children.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the awareness of patients of children with food allergy,
regarding nutrition management and eating habits in home. We conducted a questionnaire survey, at
one-day camp held in 2013 and 2014, against patients of children with food allergy. In some cases the
family members, especially father than others, had not enough knowledge of dietary treatment related
with food allergy. In contrast mothers of the patients were found to be more observant of their children’s
nutrient balance from their daily meals, but less concerned in snacks.
On the basis of these findings, we concluded that food allergy patients may experience nutritional
imbalance owing to elimination of foods with allergens. Therefore the project of one-day camps for food
allergy children accompanied with their patients should feature enhanced support system that provide
knowledge regarding nutritional management in terms of adequate intake of foods in home.
