Abstract

This paper addresses the relevance of reflective teaching to EFL
teacher education. The author argues the opportunities for student
teachers to design and teach lessons make a contribution to the enhancement
of their awareness of classroom events. Through microteaching
and self-observation, as they are designed to provoke reflection, student
teachers are encouraged to have a deeper insight and appropriate reframing
of teaching activities. The results of a case study in which twenty
English majors participated illustrate that simulated classroom teaching,
in spite of its artificiality, helped them recognise various aspects of pedagogical
skills and interpret their interplay in a more coherent and pragmatic
context. They seemed to be able to make explicit whatever tacit knowledge they had already gained as pre-service teachers. The author
proposes simulated classroom teaching should be implemented more systematically
in the teacher preparation programme at university.
