Abstract

Engoding system, as is found in the 18th century British novels, is more or less peculiar in the narrative voices, in other words, as to who tells the story to the audience: the author, the narrator, the characters, or the mixed body of them. Jane Austen, in addressing her audience as an encoder, employs them so effectively as to suit the scene she describes, and successfully foregrounds their 'voices.' Her literary style might reasonably be referred to as apparently 'static' because of the subjects she deals with, but her manner of encoding is very 'cohesive' in spite of the frequent shifts of 'voice', or point of view, and therefore 'dynamic' in the true sense of the word.
