Abstract |
Though Zora Neale Hurston's Dust Tracks on a Road is categorized under "autobiography," it is quite different from other ordinary autobiographies. Dust has been criticized and regarded as an unsuccessful work on the ground concerns that it tends to appeal to white readers and has too much self-concealment. But these negative criticisms fail because Hurston has been trying to consider everything "on a planetary scale," not with traditional literary and racially conscious attitude. She does not write a confessional autobiography but a uniquely fictionalized one, which makes her own experiences more universal. In addition, with the frequent use of free indirect discourse, she makes readers involved with the world of Dust as their own world because they have more chance to "infer" when they read her speakerly text. |
