Zora Neale Hurston's fiction was largely ignored in her life time. Her literary recovery was made through her masterpiece, Their Eyes Were Watching God. Although this work has been discussed from several points of view, her other works have not been sufficiently analyzed. In this paper, her first two short stories about Eatonville are discussed. Most of her published short fiction was written during her 10-year-apprenticeship between the early 1920's and the early 1930's and it is very significant to read this to discover her raw self.
