Many poems of Takahashi-no-Mushimaro have the theme of loneliness. As for those on a girl on Ohhashi at Kouchi (9:1742, 1743), they have a truly picturesque composition in which a colofully dressed-up girl crossed Ohhashi alone. Based on the legend of the Star Festival (when Vega meets Altair), they just suggest that she was unmarried and beautiful. Since she was going to meet her man, Mushimaro doesn't have to put particular emphasis on her "loneliness." But he did express the "loneliness." There the essence of Mushimaro's lyricism may be recognized. That is to say, the content and expression in these poems are related to the poems of Ohtomo-no-Yakamochi on the theme of loneliness, which had been tried in his head-of Ecchu (presently the Toyama and a part of the Ishikawa Prefectures) years. And the loneliness of both poets came from the incompatibility with society of groups. However, unlike Yakamochi, he couldn't deepen the loneliness, because he didn't compose monologues. It's also partly because, being a romanticist, he collected material from legends and stories with which he had sympathized. Anyway, Takahashi-no-Mushimaro is a poet of loneliness, as well as a poet of legends.
