Abstract

By the literature sarch made at Joenji Temple in 1998, the author discovered the eleven items of Kakuhitsu literature. The Joenji Temple is situated at Okimi, Saeki-Gun, Hiroshima Prefecture. This temple belongs to the Jodo-Shinshu sect. The discovery of a large amount of Kakuhitsu
literature made in the various islands of the Island Sea of Seto is significant in an attempt of identifying the areas where the writing tool called “Kakuhitsu” of ancient times had been used. In this paper, the author described his successful interpretation of all the eleven items of
Kakuhitsu literature, and clarified that the sentences written by the Kakuhitus strongly reflected the spoken language practiced in the Aki area during the Edo period. In making research on the local
dialects from a historical standpoint, the Kakuhitsu literature has been concretely proved as an ideal literature.
