The effect of detergents on shrinkage of wool plain fabrics (muslin) was studied using an electric washer under hard washing conditions (long washing time)
The results are summarized as follows.
1. Shrinkage increased with increase in concentration of detergent up to a maximum ranging from 0.10% to 0.15%.
2. Shrinkage increased with increase in pH of washing solution, among the various detergents, at the same concentration.
3. Swelling had a remarkable effect on shrinkage, but DFE (Differential Frictional Effect) had no effect.
