Wool plain fabrics (muslin) were washed under the various conditions using an electric washing machine and the effect of the washing conditions on the shearing properties were studied.
The results are summarized as follows.
1. Shearing modulus and width of hysteresis decreased as the concentration of the detergent was increased.
2. Shearing properties were affected by the type of detergent. The decrease in shearing modulus and width of hysteresis in soap was more remarkable than that in a neutral detergent.
3. When washed for a long time, the shearing modulus and width of hysteresis increased with the increase in the thickness of fabrics under the washing conditions using a neutral detergent, and soap at low concentration.
