Abstract

The central fact of the novel, The House of Mirth in relation to its structure and
theme is the powerful social mobility of the characters, the upward mobility of Mr. Simon
Rosedale, and that downward of Miss Lily Bart, the protagonist of the story. This
character movement takes place within the social strucure of fashionable New York at
the turn of the century, this being the most natural material for Mrs. Edith Wharton
as it was the time and place with which she was most familiar. In this novel she attempts to define the society she dispised, which she believed to be shallow, false, valueless and of no human significance. A frivolous society, she
thought, can acquire significance only from what it destroys and naturally generates
power to debase people and ideals. This Is the theme of all her novels of New York.
