Most of the words we use every day are the metaphorical extensions of their original meaning，but they have been so often used that we have ceased to be aware that they are
metaphors. In the world of literature，however，writers use metaphors when they are not satisfied with existing words close at hand. And readers are usually stimulated by an allusiveness of expression which requires a greater effort of imagination on their part. Yokomitsu Riichi，the central figure in ‘Neo-Sensualist Group' in 1920's，tried to make Japanese literature take a new direction to develop the possibilities of the new literary prose in the way it had not yet been attempted. His style，e specially that of his early literary period，is
filled with brilliant and suggestive images.
Translation of these metaphors into English requires sufficient understanding of cultural differences between the two languages although the interpretation of metaphorical expressions is essentially based on individual associations. The present writer compared three English translations of Yokomitsu's short story，Spring，in a Surrey，for the purpose of finding the differences of their expressions and discussing their stylistic effects respectively.
