Abstract

An eye dialect is unusual spelling intended to represent dialects or
colloquial idiosyncrasies of speech (OED). Eye dialects show us the
racial differences and social standings of individuals. An author uses
certain spelling styles of eye dialects. For example, Hurston uses the
spellings, awright ‘alright/all right’, b’lieve ‘believe’, ’cause ‘because’ and
does not accept the spellings like awryt, b’leev, kawz which do not keep
the spellings of original words. The change of spellings of words is
dependent on the author’s intention to describe the characters of a novel
