In this report, I discuss the validity of a placement test used to stream first-year students at a Japanese university. The results of three cohorts of incoming students are statistically analyzed to highlight possible problems with construct validity. As well, face validity of sub-test items is also addressed. The report continues with an analysis of the results of a fourth cohort who took a slightly revised version of the test. I also make some preliminary suggestions for further revisions to the test.

本稿では，日本の大学の新入生を対象とした英語のプレイスメントテストの妥当性について論じる。３年間のテスト結果から，テスト問題の構成概念的妥当性について統計的分析を行うとともに，出題項目の表面的妥当性についても分析する。
また，改訂が加えられたテストの結果と改訂前のテスト結果との比較を行い，今後のテスト改訂についての提案をする。
