The Hiroshima Kokusai Gakuin Character Project （HKG Character Project） is an educational program based on creating pop-culture characters. This group, organized in 2012, is mainly formed by the faculty members and students of the Faculty of Information Design and Sociology. We attempt to combine the educational program with contribution to the local community.
In this program, student create original characters, Teachers supervise and support students in various ways. In addition to advice on creating the characters, students and teachers work together with community groups such as NPOs, local governments, other educational institutions and businesses.
Since its launch in 2012, we were able to carry out 14 character projects within the program. Though this series of small projects, that are within the public domain, students gain a ‘real life’ perspective on their work. Not only do students increase their motivation to improve their illustration skills, but they also deeper their understanding of its role in society. An additional benefit of this program has been an improvement in the student’s regular curriculum.

本稿は2012年度より本学情報文化学部の教員・学生を中心に取り組んでいる「HKGキャラクタープロジェクト」に関する教育活動報告である。このプロジェクトは，教育活動を大学の地域貢献につなげようとする試みである。
本プロジェクトでは，メンバーの学生達が，オリジナルのコンテンツ・キャラクターの制作を行っている。また，担当教員は，作品制作の助言に加え，地元の自治体やNPO等の地域団体，地元の企業や他教育機関等と連携することで学生の作品発表の機会づくりを行っている。
2012年のプロジェクト立ち上げ以来，我々は14の主要事業を行うことができた（2013年8 月現在）。一連の活動を通じ，学生達は作品を社会へ発信することで，彼ら自身への外部の評価に触れることができる。それによって学生達は技能の向上や社会経験を積む動機づけを高めることができる。さらに，これらの活動を通じて，学生達には学内の正課カリキュラムへの波及効果も期待される。
