Abstract

Stainless steel tubes for a Stirling engine shell and tube heater are usually joined to the tube-sheet by welding or brazing. Since the heater is exposed directly and continuously to high temperature gases, the welding junction can be damaged due to intergranular corrosion. For the silver brazed junctions, the wax may melt if the temperature reaches about 700℃. To develop a new joining method to solve these problems, fundamental research was carried out on applying the chemical plating to such junctions. Firstly, the properties of the chemical plating film were reviewed, which showed that it may be applied to join the heater tube to the tube-sheet. Secondly, the plating process was optimized for such applications. Finally, the adhesion strength between the plating film and the tube-sheet surface, as well as the strength of the junction, was experimentally tested.
