The studies on ultra precision machining of brittle materials， such as silicon， have come into notice in recent years. A material removal with plastic deformation known as ductile mode cutting has been achieved by a very small depth of cut. The cutting has been commonly considered to be a brittle mode， when surface cracks occurred with increasing the depth of cut. On the other hand， the recent work of the indentation tests suggests that internal cracks are also develops from the boundary zone between plastic and elastic deformation. In the present study，the ductile-brittle transition point in the micro-cutting of a single crystal silicon is examined by the observations not only on the surface cracks but also on the internal cracks. The transition point determined by the internal cracks is found to occur in a shallower depth of cut compared with the point by the surface cracks. Therefore the evaluation of the internal cracks is especially important in finish cutting.

近年，シリコンのようなぜい性材料の微小切削試験が多数行われ，微小切込みによると塑性変形による材料除去，すなわち延性モード切削が実現されることが明らかとなっている。一般的には、切込みの増加につれて表面クラックが発生するとき，切削がぜい性モードになると判断されている。しかしながら，ぜい性材料の押し込み試験において，弾性変形域と塑性変形域の境界付近から内部クラックも発生することが報告されている。本研究では，ダイヤモンド立方構造を持つ単結晶シリコンの，微小切削試験における延性・ぜい性遷移点について，表面クラックだけでなく内部クラックも観察することにより検討を行った。内部クラックにもとづく遷移点は表面クラックにもとづく遷移点より浅くなることが明らかとなり，特に仕上げ加工において内部クラックの評価が重要であるといえる。
