抄録

An intuitive craft project teaching aid was devised for use in hands-on programs for elementary school students at a university. This was done to impart an intuitive understanding of the fun, interest, and amazement of craft projects and physical phenomena, and to spark motivation and curiosity for subsequent self-directed learning. The teaching aid comprised a polarization plate and various materials with birefringence, and was crafted by each student into an original name tag which exhibits flickering color. Another unique feature of the aid is that it can be enjoyed by using things like smartphones and liquid crystal displays which employ polarization, and the fact that it appears at first glance to be transparent. This teaching aid was used in Project Based Learning (PBL) activities organized by university students, and found to initiate a virtuous cycle of self-directed activity leading to evident improvement in general resourcefulness as a person.
