Basic Machining Characteristics of Super Heat Resistive Alloy lnconel 718

Ni based heat resistive alloys such as Waspalloy, Nimonic or Inconel are very difficult-to-cut materiaｌs because of their low heat conductivity, highly adhesive characteristics or superior mechanical properties. Although great efforts have been made to improve their machining characteristics, they are yet remained as difficult-to-cut materials. In this report, basic machining characteristics of typical solution-treated-and-aged Inconel 718 are investigated for the reference of ordinal machine shop. Negative, positive and round cemented carbide K grade and some ceramic tools are tested and their tool wear and cutting forces are measured. Some of the obtained results prove clearly that they are very useful for the machining of heat resistive alloy.
