Optimum Maintenance of Reinforced Concrete Structures under Life-Cycle Cost Based upon Reliability-Based System Management

The method of evaluating the expected total life-cycle cost, namely the expected total LCC while maintaining an allowable lifetime reliability for the reinforced concrete structures is developed. With this method, a lifetime optimization methodology for planning the inspection and repair of structures that deteriorate over time is able to be discussed by means of numerical analysis for a reinforced concrete T-girder that is deteriorating due to corrosion of steel rods in a rigorous environment. In this study, the effects of the timing of the inspection and repair of structures on the total life-cycle cost was especially investigated on the basis of the relationship between the amounts of the corrosion of steel rods and the crack width of the concrete.
