Abstract

Using Monte Carlo method for digital computer simulation, the effects of the statistical distribution in both initial diflection and load eccentricity on the random nature of the structural steel column failure were studied. The column failure was assumed to occure when the material yield stress first reached at any point in the column. A comparison between the simulation results and the buckling test results of the Hsection carried out by the European Convention for Constructional Steel Work (ECCS) indicated good agreement for the mean values of failure loads. The agreement was not so good for the standard deviations. It has been domonstrated that the statistical variation in the maximum load of the axially loaded steel column much more correlated to the randomness in the initial deflection than to the scatter in the load eccentricity and that its variation, which was greatest near the critical slenderness ratio, was fairly small compared with the dispersion in the initial imperfections. Furthermore, the reliabilities of the steel columns designed conformably to the provision of the steel highway bridge design specification of Japan were shown to vary with the slenderness ratio of each column.
